The State Department of Transportation has delayed the start of tolling for the downtown tunnel until the fall of this year. It originally planned to start collecting tolls in late summer.

Spokesman Chris Foster said WSDOT is transitioning to a new customer service and support system that is taking longer than expected. WSDOT must collect tolls to help pay off construction costs. It has estimated that tolls could generate $1.1 billion in 25 years.

Look here for updates on tolling for the tunnel. A new collection date has not yet been set. Rates will range from $1 to $2.25 depending upon the time of day. Buses, vanpools and emergency vehicles will be exempt from tolls if they meet specific requirements.
