The Seattle Times has a new editorial encouraging Congress to check President Trump’s power to further increase international trade tariffs.

Washington Retail has joined a business coalition led by the National Retail Federation in opposition to trade tariffs that increase costs to retailers and customers. Tariffs also invite retaliation with trading partners that has happened with China.

The editorial cites reports from the Washington Council on International Trade about the damage tariffs have done to the state’s agricultural industry including apple, cherry and potato growers. It reports that the most recent available data, through last October, Washington producers faced $127 million in new retaliatory tariffs and declining exports.
