Retail is becoming an industry where mature workers can lengthen their careers. Over the years, physical changes can take place and sometimes older workers need a slightly different tool than normal to perform their jobs.

Changes over time in strength and balance can make falls more likely. A tool common in retail that can help is a step ladder with a handrail. Whether the rail is on the side or over the top, having the ability to grasp it as you go up and down the ladder gives additional support and safety when handling merchandise.

Remember that most ladder accidents happen on the way down, when you think you are at the bottom but not quite there. A handrail provides an additional point of contact to keep a steady posture that can help prevent a fall. If you are using a plain step stool, WR’s Director of Safety and Education, Rick Means, highly recommends replacing it with a step ladder that includes a handrail. Step ladders with the extra feature are beneficial not just for older workers, but for all workers.

RS SafetyTV has a selection of related videos and SAFEME Essentials has a lesson on ladders.

WR employs Rick who is available to members to help draw up safety plans and suggest topics for safety meetings. Contact him at 360-943-9198, ext. 118, or [email protected].
