As businesses try to keep COVID under control by stepping up cleaning efforts, using a 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) based product can expose workers to enough spray vapors, which poses a risk when using them during disinfection activities.

Recently Washington Labor and Industries posted a hazard alert about sustained wiping or spraying activities in a room or enclosed area, which creates a risk for high exposure to IPA, causing irritation to workers’ eyes, nose and throat.

• Make sure the area has adequate ventilation. Immediately seek fresh air if your workers feel dizzy or other symptoms occur
• Only perform this type of cleaning for 15-minute periods at a time with a break in tasks between using IPA based cleaners
• Review the product Safety Data Sheet for proper PPE (sec. 8) and first aid (sec. 4)
• If still unsure on how to use IPA based products, get additional instruction.

If using higher than 70% solution, we advise diluting it down to a lower level. Remember alcohol is flammable and high concentrations can easily ignite.
