Seattle police have begun extra holiday patrols in nine shopping districts through New Year’s Eve.
Police Chief Carmen Best announced that the city has increased holiday patrols by more than 20% compared to the same time last year.
“Our winter holiday patrols contribute to the vitality of our neighborhoods and the safety of our residents and visitors,” she said. “Every precinct will benefit.”
Neighborhoods that are seeing emphasis patrols include Ballard; the downtown core between 3rd and 6th Avenues between Olive and Union; Capitol Hill; Fremont; Columbia City; University Village; University District; Westwood Village/Roxhill Park; and West Seattle Junction/California Ave. S.W.
Last year, officers in emphasis zones performed a variety of tasks including referrals for public service, warnings and citations. As of November of this year, citywide crime was reported to be down 6% compared to the same time in 2018.
