A focused low carbon fuel standard by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency could result in a 57-cent per gallon increase in the price of fuel, the agency’s analysis shows.
The online news source The Lens reported on the findings over the past weekend.
The agency is working on a proposal that would apply only in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. Similar statewide proposals have failed to win approval in the past two state Legislative Sessions.
The issue is important to retailers who not only rely on customers to drive to their stores but also assume fuel costs for transporting and delivering merchandise. The proposed rule aims to reduce regional carbon emissions by 25% below 2016 levels and 50% below 1990 levels by 2030.
The public has until January 6, 2020 to comment on the proposed rule. Comments can be made by email ([email protected]) ; in person at a December 19 public hearing, Washington State Convention Center, 705 Pike Street in Seattle, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30, and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and by mail to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, 1904 Third Avenue, Suite 105, Seattle 98101.
