The Seattle Office of Civil Rights is hosting a meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. today to gather feedback about an ordinance that requires closed captioning on operating business televisions in public places. The meeting is in The Central Building, 810 Third Avenue, Suite 230 in Seattle.
Director John Engber of the Retail industry Coalition of Seattle has prepared a letter of concern from affected businesses regarding vague language in the proposal. His letter focuses on clarifying how many televisions in a showroom must be showing closed captioning over live programming while seeking further explanation regarding how fines would be charged for documented violations.
Advocates for the deaf and hearing-impaired sought approval of the law by the City Council earlier this year. Tonight’s hearing aims to help determine how the law will be enforced.
