Washington Retail registered its opposition to HB 1076 during a KOMO radio interview this week.
The bill would allow third parties to sue companies for alleged workplace violations. Such complaints are now investigated by the state Labor & Industries department.
Rose Gundersen, VP of Operations & Retail Services, told reporter Carleen Johnson that a similar law in California has resulted in a flood of frivolous lawsuits. The report noted that Seattle-based Alaska Airlines paid a $25 million judgment in California for a paystub formatting case while attorneys kept 75% of the judgment. The bill is in the House Rules Committee pending further consideration.
