Pharmacies transform in response to competition

As large department stores and online retailers add more health care options, pharmacies are changing to meet the competition.

During the coronavirus pandemic, CVS and Walgreens are administering vaccines at nursing home and long-term care facilities. More than 2,000 pharmacies wlll play a pivotal role in Washington State’s campaign to speed vaccinations against COVID-19 this year. Pharmacies have begun providing faster curbside service, online orders fulfilled in 30 minutes, vaccinations by appointment and apps with 24/7 pharmacy chats.

Meanwhile, some big-box retailers have begun plans to add clinics to their real estate.

CNBC reports that the pandemic has reduced trips to the drugstore. Consumers have switched to more online purchases and COVID protocols such as wearing face masks, social distancing and working from home have reduced the need for over-the-counter cold and flu medications.
