A new Vancouver Columbian editorial calls on state legislators to keep a close eye and reverse course if necessary regarding a new states sales tax law’s obligations of qualified out-of-state shoppers in Washington State.

The law removed an immediate sales tax exemption to encourage primarily shoppers from Oregon, which has no sales tax, to shop in Washington State that does charge sales taxes. The new law required Oregonians and others who qualify for an exemption to save their receipts and apply next year for a refund on taxes they are required to pay upon purchase. Two months after the new law took effect, retailers are reporting drops in sales volume.
