Following an all-night debate, the House of Representatives voted by the narrowest of margins (50-48) to repeal the prohibition on regulating ergonomics enacted by the voters in 2003. During the 10-hour debate, which included consideration of 18 amendments, opponents of the repeal pointed out that the Department of Labor and Industries already has authority to ensure safe workplace practices and that musculoskeletal injuries are covered under Washington’s Workers Compensation programs. Opponents also reiterated that it’s impossible to regulate how individuals choose to move in their typical day-to-day activities. Nonetheless, the bill now moves to the Senate for further debate and consideration.
