Bremerton has become the 29th Washington State city to ban the use of plastic shopping bags, the Kitsap Sun reports. Bremerton’s ban takes effect on January 1, 2020.

Bremerton’s ban will require businesses to charge an 8-cent fee for thicker reusable plastic bags. Exceptions include plastic bags for packaging meat, seafood, produce, bulk items and frozen foods.

Earlier this year, the state Legislature considered a bill for a statewide ban of plastic bags but failed to take final action. Other cities approving bans include Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia.
