On Wednesday, President Biden addressed congress on the issue of gas prices and urged Congressional approval to suspend gas taxes to save the nation’s drivers 18.3¢ per gallon over a three month period.

The idea of federal gas tax relief was submitted in Senate bill S.3609 by Senator Mark Kelly, D-Arizona, back in February and, after two readings, has been referred to the Committee on Finance. However, support for the idea is mixed, with resistance from Republicans and Democrats alike.

In Washington state, with the third highest gas taxes in the nation, Senator John Braun, R-Centralia, has called for a statewide gas tax holiday. According to an article in The Chronicle, the 49¢ per gallon gas tax relief proposal has support from both sides of the aisle, per an article in The Chronicle. Governor Inslee has not expressed support for the idea of a state gas tax holiday.
