The overwhelming majority of Americans who will celebrate Independence Day tomorrow will spend an estimated $6.7 billion on the holiday, the National Retail Federation reports.

Here are the highlights of NRF’s annual survey of shoppers regarding July 4:

  • Eighty-six percent of those surveyed plan some type of celebration while 14% will not take part.
  • Each person plans to spend an average $73.33 on food for cookouts and picnics
  • Twenty-six percent of those celebrating plan to buy an additional patriotic item.
  • At 61%, cookouts are the most popular activity followed by fireworks and community celebrations, 40%; travel, 14% and attending a parade, 11%

We, too, at Washington Retail will be taking the day off Thursday to celebrate with family and friends. We hope all of you have a joyous and safe holiday as well. Many of us will be back at work on Friday.
