The midterm elections are in full swing. We call it a midterm because the President is not up for election; it is the middle of their term.
Candidates are busy knocking on doors, putting up yard signs, asking for endorsements, seeking contributions, organizing and attending events. I admire, respect, and appreciate those willing to make the sacrifice to run for public office. It takes them away from their families and careers and the financial reward is minimal—a state House member is paid $56,000 a year. They do it because they want to give back to their communities and state.
The first important dates to remember are during the filing week— May 16 through 20. Filing week is the moment of truth. Are they willing to sign on the dotted line and pay their filing fee? To run for the state House it costs $560, or 1% of the annual salary. If a candidate gets cold feet after filing, they have until May 23 to withdraw, otherwise their name will appear on the ballot and in the Voter’s Pamphlet. Here is the exception to the rule. A candidate can declare a write-in candidacy and not pay a filing fee if they do so 19+ days before the election. To participate in the Primary Election, which is on August 2, they must file by July 14. To participate in the November 8 General Election, candidates must file by October 20. If you are both a voter and a retail shop owner, I especially encourage you to learn about the candidates and make educated choices on who would best represent you, your family, and your business. If you are able, take the extra step and offer your endorsement, contribution, doorbell, put up a yard sign, attend an event, or volunteer in the campaign office. Candidates are always looking for volunteer help.
We are fortunate in this country to be able to select our representatives. At a minimum, be sure and vote in the August 2 Primary Election and the November 8 General Election. It is your right and responsibility as a U.S. citizen.
