Following an all-night debate on February 13, the House of Representatives voted by the narrowest of margins (50-48) to pass HB 1837, which repeals the prohibition on regulating ergonomics enacted by the voters in 2003. The bill now moves to the Senate Labor, Commerce & Tribal Affairs Committee, where it is scheduled for a public hearing on February 23. The Washington Retail Association will join with nearly every other business, agriculture, construction, and building organizations in testifying in opposition to the bill. Retailers have undertaken significant efforts to lower the risk of ergonomic-related injuries, and injuries have declined as a result. Training and education on workflow processes and appropriate equipment are more effective at reducing injuries than imposing “one size fits all” regulatory processes.
