The state Legislature has unanimously approved a bill to expand detection and speed reporting of data breaches. It now goes to Gov. Inslee for his expected signature.
The bill reduces the deadline to notify consumers to 30 days from 45 days. It also expands the number of personal identifiers that hackers may have accessed in addition to someone’s name.
For example, in addition to common identifiers such as a driver’s license or social security number, the bill requires reporting if names are connected to birth dates, health insurance identification numbers, student and military identification numbers, passport ID numbers, passwords and biometric data such as DNA profiles or fingerprints.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson called for the bill based on increasing numbers of consumers affected by data breaches.
