It could reopen in 2022

Mayor Jenny Durkan has announced that Seattle will first repair and reopen the West Seattle Bridge. It has been closed since March when inspectors discovered cement cracks on the structure.

Durkan also directed transportation officials to continue early design work for an eventual replacement of the bridge. It is the major thoroughfare connecting the West Seattle peninsula to downtown and the rest of city.

“We will move forward with repairing the West Seattle Bridge to restore mobility as soon as possible,” Durkan said. Replacement could cost more than $500 million and take five years to complete. The cost of repairing the bridge is estimated at $47 million.
