Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, chair of the Finance & Housing Committee (which develops the City budget) and second longest-tenured member of the Council, is seeking election to the open 8th district on the King County Council. That seat is being vacated by the retiring Joe McDermott, a long-time state legislator, and King County Councilmember.
Councilmember Mosqueda holds Position 8 on the Seattle Council. That citywide seat is not on the ballot again until 2025, so she will be serving either on the Seattle or King County Council next year. If she wins the King County race, the Seattle City Council will appoint an interim Councilmember to serve in Position 8, which will be on the ballot in November 2024. The winner of that election will take office as soon as the election result is certified.
