An amended ordinance to require closed captioning on televisions in stores won unanimous approval this week from the Seattle City Council’s Civil Rights, Utilities, Economic Development & Arts Committee.
Suggested amendments came from John Engber, Director of Washington Retail’s Retail Industry Coalition of Seattle. They essentially set limits on how many televisions must display closed captioning for deaf and hard-of-hearing customers.
The full nine-member City Council could consider the ordinance further when it meets on Monday. Washington Retail supports the amended version of the ordinance as adopted by the committee. Click here for more details about the ordinance including a history of the issue.
