Tolls will begin on Saturday, November 9 for the State Route 99 tunnel through downtown Seattle. The two-mile-long structure that opened last February is the nation’s largest double-decked road tunnel.
Tolls will vary from $1 on weekends to $2.25 during weekday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Drivers are urged to obtain a Good to Go! pass that allows for the lowest possible rates. Without a Good to Go! account, tolls will be an additional $2 for each trip. Go online to 99tunnel.com to start an account or call 866-936-8246 but expect to wait on hold.
The Washington State Department of Transportation urges motorist to allow extra time on their commutes to and from Seattle when tolls start. Officials expect a percentage of commuters to switch to surface streets when the tunnel no longer is free.
