Barnes and Noble returns to downtown Seattle

Barnes & Noble is set to reopen in downtown Seattle on May 6, marking a notable return for the national retailer after several years. The new two-level store will occupy more than 17,000 square feet at 520 Pike Street, with a community ribbon-cutting event planned ahead of opening.

The return follows the company’s departure from downtown in 2020 and comes after several prominent retail closures in recent years. Local leaders, including the Downtown Seattle Association, view the reopening as a positive indicator for the city’s retail core and broader economic recovery.

According to the association, downtown Seattle is showing signs of renewed momentum. Residential population levels have reached record highs; visitor activity has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, and foot traffic continues to increase. These trends are helping to attract both returning and new businesses to the area.

The new location replaces a previously vacated retail space and adds to the company’s existing presence in Seattle. The reopening reflects ongoing shifts in urban retail environments and signals growing confidence in downtown markets as consumer activity continues to rebound.
