Washington Retail urges the Legislature to approve SB 5062 to protect the privacy of personal consumer information. The legislation should clearly spell out the responsibilities of retailers and companies who process sales and allow consumers the right to request that their information be removed from company sales records. Authority to enforce these obligations should be assigned to the state Attorney General’s office. Such a law also should allow retailers to continue using customer loyalty programs that target promotions based upon consumer purchasing preferences. Such a law has the potential to act as a model for Congress to approve a uniform personal standard to ensure data privacy.
